A Letter to Our Community
In Memory of “Doug the Fence Guy”
My name is Emily, and I’m the daughter of Doug, the heart behind Fences By Doug (FBD). For 39 years, my dad and his fences have been a fixture in Howard County.
This summer, many of you may have reached out for an estimate or repair and noticed an unusual pause. In all of FBD’s history, my dad rarely stepped away from his work (he practically had to be pulled away to take a vacation). But this time, life had other plans.
It’s with deep sadness that I share that my father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this May from cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer. He had no symptoms and often joked that he was on the “90-year plan.”
Our family was blindsided, both personally and professionally. In the 16 days between his diagnosis and passing, we worked tirelessly to make plans for the business, but the pause this summer was necessary—legally, logistically, and emotionally.
My dad loved what he did (sometimes, perhaps, a little too much). When doctors asked what he’d be doing if he wasn’t in the hospital, his answer came easily: “running my fence business.” He loved his work, his crews, his community, and all of you who supported him, and you loved him right back.
I share much with my father, including a zest for life, positive attitude, and strong determination and appreciation of hard work. He was a light in moments of darkness, brought welcome laughter in moments of discomfort, and someone who truly lived by the values he taught. As his daughter and only child, it’s my honor to carry on his legacy as we approach FBD’s 40th year.
Growing up, FBD has always been a part of my life—from tagging along with my father on estimates (maybe you even met me back then!), to smelling the scent of sawdust in the summer after he walked in from the garage, to supporting the business’s digital transition by managing the website and social media. I’m now proud to say that I’m licensed and insured as an MHIC contractor in my own right, and am committed to upholding the high standards my father set.
FBD will continue under my leadership, with the same trusted crews and, most importantly, the transparency and integrity my father was known for. We are currently finalizing our transition and are working to resume full working capacity by mid-September.
Whether you’ve been with FBD since the beginning or are seeking a fence for the first time, I look forward to meeting you. Thank you so much for your patience and support as we find our way forward. I'm truly grateful to be part of this community and excited to continue serving Howard County.
If you have any questions about the transition or want to reach out, you can email me directly at emily@fbdfence.com. To join our estimate waitlist, please submit an inquiry via our website form.
With Gratitude,
